On 1st April 2022 the SIA introduced an updated Close Protection qualification for new applicants into the sector. The updated qualification features four new units covering: –
- Bespoke physical intervention skills
- Knowledge of door supervisor responsibilities (including protecting vulnerable people)
- Legislation, threat and risk management
- Personal skills, surveillance awareness, search procedures, foot drills, venue security, journey management reconnaissance and preparing and carrying out a close protection assignment
The existing units which cover the theoretical and practical aspects of working as a close protection operative have been refreshed .
Close Protection Operatives
From 1 October 2022, you must have one of the following before you can apply for, or renew, a close protection licence:
- The new qualification introduced on 1 April 2022
- One of the older licence-linked qualifications and a ‘top-up’ qualification
This applies to any applications, including renewals.
You will also require an approved First Aid Course for SIA Certification. Our Highfield Level 3 Award In First Aid At Work (RQF) meets this requirement
Who is this qualification for?
The objective of this qualification is to enhance and up skill the learner with additional sector specific knowledge. It is designed for learners who currently hold a Close Protection licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a Close Protection operative and need to be brought up to date with the new licence-linked qualifications requirements.
How long will it take?
To complete this qualification learners should expect to complete 3 days face to face training. There will also be a requirement to complete a pre-course workbook prior to undertaking the face to face training.

Assessment method
This qualification is assessed by practical assessments and multiple-choice examinations.
